Bariatric weight loss surgery is no small undertaking and like all major decisions understanding the full implication of this lifelong commitment is essential and why Dr Silverman works with a multidisciplinary team.

In my experience of 20 years working in bariatric weight management and what research also reveals; clients who allow themselves sufficient time prior to surgery to identify, explore and prepare for the long term adjustments have greater confidence in their ability to attain a better quality of life and are more successful in achieving their outcomes. Furthermore, those who continue to seek psychological support in managing the complexity of post-surgical change - adjustment in the relationship with food, sustaining motivation to continue lifestyle changes, readjustment to oneself as a slimmer person, possible changes with the relationship of friends and family, and intimate relationship, possible career opportunities and etc. are more able to cope with obstacles that may arise.

I believe weight management is a complex issue that benefits from a multidisciplinary team approach with you, the individual in the driver’s seat. I prefer to use a positive psychological approach to assist you in determining life as a healthier person and making this concept a reality for the long term. I believe lifestyle change is one of the most difficult objectives to achieve and amongst other factors requires a strong meaningful purpose, a process in accord with your belief system, a support network, a good skill set and courage. The journey to a healthier emotional and physical wellbeing is one of personal development and whist it is important to have goals to work towards; it is the journey that matters.

Other psychological therapies are also engaged to deal with any underlying issues contributing to disordered eating such as depression and anxiety or other adverse life experiences.
